The Fisheries Ecology Division (FED, https://swfsc.noaa.gov/GroundfishAnalysis/) of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) has conducted a midwater trawl survey off central California since 1983 with the primary goal of developing pre-recruit indices for young-of-the-year (YOY) rockfish (Sebastes spp.). The survey also samples numerous other components of the epipelagic micronekton, including other YOY groundfish (such as Pacific hake, Merluccius productus, and sanddab, Citharichthys spp ), coastal pelagic fishes (such as Pacific sardine, Sardinops sagax, and northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax) and other forage species. Additional details regarding the survey methods and results are described in Ralston et al. (2015) and Sakuma et al. (http://calcofi.org/publications/calcofireports/v57/Vol57-Sakuma_pages.163-183.pdf). Ralston, S., J.C. Field and K.S. Sakuma. 2015. This dataset has the following 30 columns:

Column NameAPI Column NameData TypeDescriptionSample Values
timetimecalendar_dateThe date and time the trawl net first enters the water. Where Net-in time is missing, the fishing start time is used.
latitudelatitudenumberGPS North latitude when the trawl net first enters the water.
longitudelongitudenumberGPS East longitude when the trawl net first enters the water.
cruisecruisetextA four character cruise identifier. The first two digits are the year and the last two are sequential order in which the cruise occurred. Example: 0504 is the fourth David Starr Jordan cruise in 2005.
haul_nohaul_nonumberUnique number for each trawl conducted within a cruise. Together with cruise, it creates a primary key.
vesselvesseltextUnique identifier for the vessel used for a particular cruise. Abbreviation of the vessel names: DSJ=David Starr Jordan, MF=Miller Freeman, FR=Frosti, EX=Excalibur, SH=Bell M. Shimada, OS=Ocean Starr.
stationstationnumberStation number based on a fixed position. Station can be blank if the trawl was conducted at a location that does not correspond to one of the fixed position stations in the STANDARD_STATIONS table.
catchcatchnumberNumber of specimens caught for a given specie/taxonomic group.
species_codespecies_codenumberNumeric code denoting species or other taxonomic group.
common_namecommon_nametextCommon name of the species or taxonomic group.
sci_namesci_nametextScientific name of the species or taxonomic group.
species_groupspecies_grouptextGeneral categories for grouping select species or taxonomic groups.
maturitymaturitytextPossible choices for the life history stage of the given species or taxonomic group: Y=young-of-the-year (YOY)/pelagic stage A=older than YOY/post-settlement U=unknown. These do not refer to reproductive maturity stages.
species_notesspecies_notestextNotes on when species were added to list, years enumerated, etc.
aphiaidaphiaidnumberWoRMS taxon id.
match_typematch_typetextWoRMS taxon id match type.
lsidlsidtextpersistent, location-independent, resource identifier.
station_latitudestation_latitudenumberGPS North latitude of the station.
station_longitudestation_longitudenumberGPS East longitude of the station.
ctd_indexctd_indexnumberUnique number for each CTD conducted within a cruise.
station_bottom_depthstation_bottom_depthnumberCharted bottom depth of the station.
areaareatextGeneral geographic area the station occupies.
stratastratatextAbbreviation of survey region (N=North, NC=North Central, C=Core, SC=South Central, S=South).
tdr_depthtdr_depthnumberWater depth of the headrope bridle recorded by Temperature Depth Recorder (TDR). (meters)
depth_stratadepth_stratanumberSingle digit reference number for the target headrop depth where 1=10m, 2=30m, 3=90m, 4=other
bottom_depthbottom_depthnumberBottom depth where the trawl was conducted. The depth either comes from an acoustic sensor or from a chart. (meters)
station_activestation_activetextDesignates currently sampled stations (Y) versus historic stations no longer sampled (N).
station_notesstation_notestextMostly used to denote when new stations were added.
